\n\nMadre Assunta Shelter for Women and Children &\; Al Otro Lado Legal Services in Tijuana Mexico
\n\n*Al Otro Lado \;is a direct legal services not-for-profit organization with offices in San Diego\, L.A.\, and Tijuana\, serving indigent deportees\, refugees\, and asylum seekers. The Project provides know-your-rights training and is deeply engaged in efforts to protect the familial rights of migrants and asylum seekers\, while also conducting human rights monitoring at the San Ysidro port-of-entry.
\n\n*Madre Asunta\, \;in partnership with Serving Hands Int.\, is the first shelter in Tijuana to provide dignified assistance to women &\; children who have been displaced after deportation from the United States or are migrating from central Mexico. The Center has for 17 yrs\, helped 17\,000+ migrant women and children\, providing meals\, clothing\, legal assistance\, spiritual\, mental &\; medical care.
\n\nA note about the Poster from Artist \;Veronica Velasquez \;&ldquo\;I was actually sitting through a math lecture when drawing thumbnail ideas for the poster and that&rsquo\;s when I lingered on the final layout. Something I&rsquo\;ve really come to realize while living in Los Angeles\, is my growing curiosity and appreciation for my Mexican roots. I&rsquo\;ve been exposed to Mexican folklore and art more than ever and that&rsquo\;s what influenced my decision making on colors and plant/flower elements. A long time family friend \;has been traveling to Tijuana\, Mexico helping and encouraging children and other residents of the shelters there. She sent me photos and videos that helped me develop the house in the center with people inside. Some of these people are based off the ones in the photographs. My favorite was a girl with her hand on her head. The succulent behind the people were originally more people but I realized they looked like succulent petals. Succulents represent resistance\, enduring love and good luck. The angels on the bottom resemble a very familiar and nostalgic painting that has always been hung up in my bedroom since childhood &ldquo\;Á\;ngel de la Guarda&rdquo\; Guardian Angel\, which goes along with a prayer my grandmother would tell to my mom and her siblings. In the prayer we ask for the guardian angel&rsquo\;s protection and guidance through night and day. The idea of portraying these people through art got me excited. As an artist and designer I&rsquo\;m also an activist at heart\, art is one of my ways to strive towards social change.&rdquo\; \;The original artwork will be auctioned off for this event!
