Mulholland Drive
Join us at the Lincoln Theatre to bid farewell to director David Lynch, one of the world's great maverick filmmakers, with a screening of arguably his finest achievement: the dreamlike neo-noir Mulholland Drive. A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity. The night will be hosted by Alexandre O. Philippe, who will provide an intro to the film and a Q&A afterward. A 3-time Sundance Film Festival alumnus, Alexandre O. Philippe has developed his own brand of "cinema essay," exploring the art of filmmaking and its practitioners. Most of his films take on the role of unpacking the most influential works of master filmmakers, and dissecting seminal screen moments. Selected past works include: You Can Call Me Bill (SXSW '23), Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist (Venice '19, Sundance '20), Memory: The Origins of Alien (Sundance '19), 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene (Sundance '17), Doc of the Dead (SXSW '14), and The People vs. George Lucas (SXSW '10). His latest film, Chain Reactions, won the prestigious Venice Classics Lion at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival. Lynch/Oz -- Alexandre's unique take on the art and cinema of David Lynch -- premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and was subsequently released in theaters by Janus Films and on home video by the Criterion Collection. He is currently working on two films with Hollywood icon Kim Novak, slated for release in the Fall of 2025 and 2026, respectively.
